Starting a pottery studio at home can be an exciting and rewarding venture. But before diving in, it's important to set up your space correctly to ensure efficiency, safety, and long-term enjoyment.
1. Proper Ventilation is Key - One of the most overlooked aspects of home pottery studios is ventilation. When working with clay, underglazes, or glazes, harmful dust, like silica, and fumes can accumulate. These particles can cause serious respiratory issues over time. A well-ventilated space, such as one with open windows or a designated exhaust system, is critical for your health and comfort. 2. Kiln Location Matters - Your kiln will be the heart of your studio, but it’s not just about plugging it in. Kilns generate a lot of heat and may emit fumes, so it needs to be placed in an area with proper ventilation, away from flammable materials like wood or paper. Check that your kiln's power requirements match your electrical supply, as kilns often require special outlets and circuits. A fire extinguisher nearby is also a good safety measure. Also be aware that if you place your kiln in a metal shed with no ventilation, the fumes will erode it and the shed may collapse. Fumes include carbon monoxide, sulfur oxides, hydrogen fluoride and metal vapors which are all very toxic. Most kiln suppliers can advise you on the correct system to suit your kiln. If you are purchasing a second hand kiln, contact the brand's manufacturer and get information on their ventilation systems to suit your studio space.
3. You'll Need More Space Than You Think - And don't I know it! Pottery isn’t just about having a wheel or a kiln, it requires plenty of storage space for tools, raw materials, drying pieces, and finished works. You’ll also need flat surfaces to roll out clay, shelves for drying, and cupboards or containers for your glazes, tools, and other supplies. A well organised space means more efficiency and fewer mishaps. TIP: I found labelling containers with its contents so helpful. I purchased a DYMO label maker from Officeworks and have labelled everything.
